The Crusihic
Part One "The nature of magic is changing, Larkin. You must find the cursed princess in the northern lands to aid you..."Larkin glowered as those words played through his mind as he knocked on the hardwood door, and stood in wait. Almost instantly it was opened, but just enough for a girl to peek her head out. Larkin couldn't make out many details in the dark, but it was hard to miss the blueberry-colored eyes. "Princess Elowon? I am here to--" "Are you here to rescue me?" she cut in, eying Larkin in curiosity, having never seen a man with such long hair. "No--" "Are you a prince?" "Well, no--" The door snapped shut before Larkin could utter another word. The duke stood there, blinking. What was up with this girl? He didn't have time for this. "Princess Elowon, at least hear me out," he said, knocking once again. This time the door opened a bit wider, but he still could not see her all that well. "Are you here to rescue me?" "We already had this conversation, princess. I need your...assistance." Larkin said, trying very hard to hide his disgust at the idea. "Don't you know?" Elowon began. "I can not leave this room until a prince comes to me and takes my hand in eternal marriage." "What happens when you leave without a prince?" Larkin couldn't help but ask, raising an eyebrow. "...I get hiccups." Elowon replied softly. Larkin bit back a laugh. "That's all? You get hiccups." "It hurts!" Elowon whined, and snapped the door shut again. Larkin sighed, and leaned against the wall by the door. What kind of pathetic curse was that?! He was expecting that she would turn into a werewolf or something if she attempted to get out. But hiccups? "I-I know it's not the best of curses," came Elowon's muffled voice through the door, "but my fairy wanted to do the least bit of damage that she could..."

Larkin couldn't help but roll his eyes.
"Some fairy you had. I thought all princesses were suppose to have a terrible curse. No wonder you haven't been 'saved' by a prince already! He'd be too embarrassed!"
The door swung open, and Elowon marched out and stood before the duke with her hands on her wide hips.
"Watch what you -hic- say about -hic- my prince! He -hic- will come and -hic- save me from this -hic- curse! And -hic-....love me for all that I -hic- am!"
Larkin once again raised his eyebrow, noticing the princess was wearing fluffy pink pajamas and a night cap that her hair seemed to be bunched under.
"Pajamas and all? Shouldn't you be ready for this glorious day?"
"Why are you so -hic- mean!" She whined, tapping one of her long, delicate fingers on her hip. "Just -hic- leave!" With that Elowon stormed into her room and snapped the door shut. Larkin stood before the door again, thinking.
"...I could lift the curse--"
"UGH! I don't want to be married, to a, a..." the door opened again to reveal Elowon as she gazed at Larkin. "...A long-haired man in a dress!" Larkin flushed, both in anger and embarrassment.
"No! I didn't mean it that way! And this is not a dress!"
"You have a bad taste in clothes. A trench coat and a cape? Talk about lame." Elowon said in a dry tone, leaning against the doorway. Larkin drew in a deep breath through his teeth, trying to keep his patience.
"I'm a duke. Now, I will temporarily rid you of your curse...if you agree to help me."

There was a long stretch of silence, then Elowon stuck up her chin in defiance.
"No, I want a prince to rescue me."
Larkin sighed, and all but glared at the the princess. Then he turned on his heel and marched away without another word.
The duke returned to Elowon's castle a week later, but he wasn't alone. Striding by his side on a brilliant black and white steed was a handsome prince, who looked uncertain as they neared the castle.
"How bad is her curse?" Prince Nimble asked, looking down to Larkin as they stopped before the castle gates.
"Oh, it's bad. It causes her great...pain." Larkin lied convincingly. At this the prince hurriedly got down from his horse.
"Then we must hurry! Are you qualified to wed us?"
"Yes," the duke said, and the two of them made their way inside.
Prince Nimble knocked upon Elowon's door, running a hand quickly through his feathery white-blond hair. Larkin stood peeking around the corner, so that Elowon wouldn't suspect this as his doing.
Elowon peeked her head cautiously out the door, and froze wide-eyed at the handsome prince that stood before her.
"Princess Elowon, I am here to rid you of your curse and take your hand in eternal marriage," Nimble said, going down on one knee and presenting a diamond ring. "Will you marry me?"
Larkin wasn't sure whether or not generating a relationship out of thin air would work, but it was worth a try.

Elowon gasped, and opened the door all the way. Larkin was relieved to see that Elowon was actually dressed for the occasion. She wore a white dress that descended to just below her knees and had a short split up the side. Her sun blessed hair tumbled down her shoulders to her thighs.
Prince Nimble was shocked, and his mouthy hung slightly open.
"Yes, of course!" Elowon finally declared. Larkin strode forward and cleared his throat. Nimble blinked, shut his mouth, and put the ring on Elowon's finger.
"I hereby declare you eternal partners as husband and wife, ands you'll be able to kiss her later." Larkin said, snatching the dazed Elowon by the wrist and he began to lead her down the hallway. "I'm borrowing your princess."
"Stop right there, duke!" Nimble declared, springing to his feet and dashing after them. "I can't just allow you to take her away! She is to return with me to my castle!"
"Then you can just say that you misplaced her. And I'll happen to find her and bring her back within a week." Larkin concluded simply, opening the front doors and strolling through the gates. He lifted Elowon onto the prince's horse and hopped up before her.
"Duke Larkin! Bring my princess back!" Nimble demanded, springing for the horse. But Larkin nudged his heels into horses sides and it shot forward, making Nimble do a complete face plant. Elowon hung on tight, but turned her head to watch as Nimble became a speck in the distance.
"...So, when can I see him again?"

And so Princess Elowon and Duke Larkin rode through open fields and into a dense forest until sundown, when Elowon wouldn’t stop whining about being hungry, cold and sore.
“But we have so much distance to cover, Elowon!”
“Don’t start with me, duke! Or I’ll use my authority on you!” Elowon snapped, getting a bit cranky. “Besides, you haven’t even told me where we are going, or why!” Larkin gritted his teeth and bade the horse to stop as they came to a small clearing in the trees.
“Fine. I guess you deserve an explanation.”
After Larkin had made a small fire and had tethered the exhausted horse, he sat down opposite Elowon and began to weave his tale.
“As you know, the magic users have begun to abuse their power. The source of magic from the High Stones are basically running out of power, and can not regenerate without a certain…push, I guess you could say." Larkin said, resting his hands on his knees. Elowon seemed to be interested enough, but she frowned in wonder.
"So...what does this have to do with me?" Elowon asked. Larkin cleared his throat and looked a bit shifty.
"Your power to control time, Elowon."
