Betrayal, that's what it was. One of the many crimes that could go by without notice. Divine huffed to himself, his hand coming to rest on the cold barrel of his handgun. Love wasn't the only thing that could tear out a heart and stomp hatred into it. She had betrayed him, and now...she was going to pay for it.
The night was dark, sinking into his already darkened spirits. Divine felt a surge of unrealistic power as he slid the gun into his back pocket, flipping his black leather jacket over it. His dull brown eyes set upon the building across the street. There was his target...her. She was probably inside, counting all that precious money she had stolen from him.
Divine casually walked across the street, cursing under his breath at the dog that started to bark somewhere on down the block. But it seemed this dog cried 'wolf' too often--no one peeked out their doors or windows to see the disturbance. Divine smirked rather evilly as he reached the door, and held still. After a while, the dumb dog stopped barking, and he could hear voices inside. Slowly, he reached his hand up and twisted the doorknob. Perfect...it was unlocked.
He slipped in, and gently let the door click shut behind him. His steps, though he wore heavy boots, were light and placed carefully. Anger seared into him as he thought of how she had betrayed him. That hard money they had earned, the money that would have taken them to California to start new lives. She had promised him she'd go along with him. But now she had turned his back on him, and had taken it all.
Fueled by this sudden ambition, Divine stepped into the living room. There Rachel sat on the couch, a large zip lock bag full of bills on one side and pencil and paper on the other. Her hazel eyes widened dramatically as she fluidly stood up at his presence.
"Daddy, listen to me--"
"You betrayed me, Rachel. You stole all of it! And for what? Your own greedy desires."
"N-no! We agreed years ago, dad, that this money would go to my children."
"What children? You lier!" Divine reached back and pulled out his gun, cocking it and aiming right at her heart. Rachel's eyes widened even more. Divine had a mental illness...but to go this far? Her tearing eyes closed. There was a loud bang, then the young woman collapsed to the floor, dead. Divine was breathing hard, eyes wild.
"Mom! What was that?"
"Mommy? We want our bedtime story now!" The silence that had ensued was penetrated by those small voices. Divine turned, and saw three children coming down the stairs. He felt his heart quicken, his memory flood back. He felt the blood leave his face as he fell to his knees, the gun dropping down to the spoiled rug with a dull thud. It was he who had betrayed...
