Prologue
"Don't let her become a memory..."
Adder tensed, his eyes watering as the woman on the bed before him spoke her last gentle words, at which seemed to die along with her. The hand he held slowly became cold, the warmth fading. Adder stood there, eyes still starring, unable to believe what had just happened. The sweat that had dampened the woman's forehead trickled down like tears, until they came to fall upon the sheets that lay as lifelessly as the woman herself.
The bustle about the room was forgotten, the doctors scurrying about, trying to gain order. Ginger's death had been quite unexpected, but the baby had been delivered, even though it was a week before her time. Finally, things began to quiet down.
Adder took no notice. His wife, his companion to live and love for...was dead. His world had taken a sudden nose dive into shocked depression and disbelief. He didn't even notice as he was gently pulled back, Ginger's limp hand falling from his. Adder was brought back to life, though, as the gurgle of his new born child came to sound across the silent room.
Adder blinked his brown eyes, lifting his gaze to a nurse standing nearby. She smiled at him, holding a bundle in her arms with the up-most care. She walked up to him, and Adder accepted the bundle. Holding the precious baby in his arms, he gazed down upon his daughter.
Life had been taken away, and life had been given...
