Straight Line
Chapter One: Time Split It was coming. And heck, he was ready for it! His steady grip, his ready stance, that determined look in his green eyes... WHACK![/i] The swing was perfectly timed and made the perfect hit. The baseball soared gloriously, and those in the stands as witnesses seemed to drop their jaws and widen their eyes in awe. The baseball soared across the field and over the fence, and into the park beyond. The crowd erupted into roaring cheers, stamping feet and rapidly clapping hands. Jacen lightly dropped his bat and began to easily jog around to first base, then second, third, and finally to home. "Jacen! That was awesome man! The way you hit the ball...it's just...awesome!" The Chronopolis Tigers Baseball Team was clamored about in the boys' locker and shower room, claiming victory and rather evilly taunting their now beaten opponents. It was a good thing the other team was not around, for some of the things Jacen's teammates were speaking weren't very proper. "Dave, I get it. Hey, did anyone find the ball?" Jacen asked, rubbing his pale blond hair dry with a fluffy, clean white towel. Dave, his tall, dark-haired friend started laughing, and plopped himself down onto a bench in front of his and Jacen's lockers. "Yeah! Dude, some lady was ranting because it ended up crashing into her bowl of potato salad. We got her calmed down, though. It was hilarious! Oh yeah, guess what? Tomorrow is the last day of school! Wooohoo!" Jacen stopped rubbing at his hair, peeking out from under the towel at Dave. The way he switched topics was just...mind-boggling! "Oh yeah, that's right...crazy how we had a game today..." "And last of the season, and a victory we can rub in their faces, ha ha!" Dave inclined, referring to their opponents. Jacen shook his head and tossed the now damp towel on Dave, then proceeded to pull on his collared, button-up shirt he wore over his white T-shirt. "You know, it's not just about winning, and rubbing victory in their faces--" "Yes it is! What's wrong with ya?" Dave said in a joking manner, tossing the towel randomly over his shoulder and smothering someone who was passing behind him. "Anyhow, let's get going. Last day of being a Sophomore! On our way back to the top!" Dave said cheerfully, ignoring the eye rolls and the muttered exclamation from the towel-in-face victim as he and Jacen left the locker room. Jacen paused at the doorway, a hand flashing out to firmly grip the frame as a wave of dizziness suddenly hit him. He blinked. What could this be? He was healthy, he had had plenty of water, he hadn't gotten up too quickly...Dave looked back over his shoulder, then stopped. "Yo, you okay?" "Yeah...yeah! Just fine! Let's get going." Jacen replied, feeling the vertigo suddenly leave him. Pushing himself from the doorway, he jogged to catch up with Dave, who put a silly grin on his face. But as they jogged along to his car, Jacen was troubled. He wasn't coming down with something...was he? (Feel free to leave comments! I'm not picky about that at all, so please ^__^!?)

( *ish jerked* Weeee xD! Fine fine, here's another part of the chapter. XD )
Dave was the one to save Jacen from his adoring crowd as they entered the school building the next day, gently yanking his friend down the hallway toward their lockers.
"Sorry dudes! But he isn't up the signing autographs today!" Dave yelled cheerfully over his shoulder, and Jacen chuckled. But obviously the hint was taken, for no one came to congratulate him in a large mass. Jacen received pats on the back from passerby as he collected his books, though, which didn't bother him. Jacen grunted as the weight of the books almost caught him off balance. As he was tipping backward, a pair of hands pressed on his back to gently righten him. Adjusting the weight in his arms, Jacen turned to thank whoever had helped him, but there was no one currently behind him. He blinked and looked on down the hallway to see a flash of blond hair disappear around the corner.
"Earth to Jacen! What's up with you?" Dave asked as he lugged the last book out of his locker, adjusting the weight in his arms. He retreated a couple of steps back, then poked up his long leg to shut his locker. But such a movement teetered him off balance right into Jacen, and they both tumbled to the floor in a crash of bodies and books. There was laughter, then voices of concern as people rushed down the hall to them.
"Dave, can't...breath..." Jacen gasped out, for both Dave and many text books had decided to pin his chest and stomach down. He felt a bit dazed as Dave was hauled to his feet, and then himself. There were sharp pains from where the books had hit him, and he felt a bit winded. Glancing at Dave, he seemed to be feeling the same thing as well. To Jacen's growing embarrassment, the people who had helped them were a bunch of girls. Without asking, they picked up the boys' books, having already turned theirs in.
"Here, we'll turn these in for you."
"Are you okay? That must've hurt!"
"It looked funny, though."
As the girls started talking, Jacen regained his breath and thanked them as they went on their way. Then he noticed there was still a book on the floor--his math book. He bent down to pick it up, and noticed that Dave had obviously taken an interest to his saviors and had trailed after them. Rolling his eyes, Jacen started down the opposite way to the math classroom. His mind popped back to that flash of blond hair that had disappeared around the corner. Had she been the one to help him the first time...?
His thoughts were so occupied that when he came to the door, he didn't notice the first wave of dizziness. But the second he stepped through the doorway, it hit him full force. Jacen steadied himself and clamped his eyes shut, an odd sound filling his ears and a sickening feeling wrapping around his stomach. Just when he thought it would never end, it did. His head cleared, and the sound faded slowly away. Carefully, Jacen opened his eyes...only to find several students, sitting impatiently in their desks, looking at him. It took him a moment to notice some one was talking to him.
"Young man, are you feeling okay?" Jacen blinked and straightened up, and was surprised to see a man with thinning drown hair. This wasn't his math teacher...looking around, Jacen noticed the classroom was different, too. Instead of the gray, hard rug was a shinning wooden floor. What...? "Excuse me, but we haven't began to turn in our books yet." Jacen cleared his throat and forced himself to remain calm as he looked back to the teacher.
"Oh, yes, sorry." Jacen said, and quickly turned away and paced down the hallway. It seemed...cleaner. The lockers were more white than the tan he had grown use to, the walls had organized posters, instead of the jumbled ones students put up to get attention on their clubs. Jacen slowed his pace, and came to a stop. What was going on?
"Hello, Jacen."
Both Jacen and his heart jumped at the voice that spoke behind him, and he spun around. There stood a girl a head shorter than him, with long blond hair and pretty blue eyes. She wore jeans that flared at the bottom, and a plain white T-shirt that fit her figure rather well. That hair...could it be the same girl...the same person who had helped him keep his balance?
"Who are you, how do you know my name?" Jacen managed to squeeze out, gripping his math book with his nervousness.
"I am Mimix, Apprentice Guardian of Time." Mimix said cheerfully enough, holding out her hand to Jacen. But he was too stunned to move at this point, and realization lit Mimix's features. "Oh, yeah...that probably wasn't the best thing to say at the moment. However, we need to find a place to talk..." her voice trailed off as she looked down the hallway, noticing that students were beginning to file loudly out of the classrooms.
"H-here, I know where." Jacen found himself saying, and he gathered himself up and led the way down the hall. He felt numb, he had no idea what was going on. The girl came to walk confidently at his side, keeping quiet, but smiled casually at those that passed them. She had a strange feeling about her, but yet...he wasn't frightened of her in general. Jacen felt oddly comfortable around her. And if she could explain what was going on, then he would like her all the better!

Jacen led Mimix into the band room, which was thankfully empty. The lights were off, but pleasant sunlight streamed in though the window. The band room was conveniently set apart a ways from the other classrooms, so they would have the privacy to talk. Shakily, Jacen sat down on a chair. So far, he knew he was still in his high school. But he was relived to see the band room had not gone through any dramatic changes. Mimix stood before him, and drew in a deep breath.
"I don't mean to be blunt, but it's best to get the confusing part over with first. There was a time split, and you just happened to be at the wrong place at the right time. If I am correct...then this is five years in the future."
"Time..split?" Poor Jacen was trying to get past his disorientation to understand her.
"Right, imagine a...an oval." Mimix swirled her index finger in an oval shape in the air, then continued to further demonstrate with her hands. "And it suddenly snapping, leaving two ends dangling free. Imagine one end tighten itself into a knot, and the other end coming back to attach itself to that knot. You just happened to be at that certain...location, if you will, when it happened. Which resulted in you being 'warped' to the future. Tell me," Mimix said in sudden curiosity, leaning a bit closer to Jacen, "did you see anything? Feel anything? I'm actually surprised you aren't suffering from side effects. Or are you?"
"I feel very disorientated. And confused." Jacen said slowly, taking a deep breath. His hands couldn't seem to stop shaking. "When it happened, I...I had my eyes closed, because I was so dizzy. There was this odd noise, a buzzing noise. I felt sick to my stomach. Then I was suddenly feeling fine, and...yeah." Mimix nodded and straightened back up, but Jacen could tell she was a little disappointed. "What would I have seen if my eyes had been open?" Jacen asked, finding himself become more curious than confused. Oddly, this was all making sense.
"Well, I really don't know. This is my first time dealing with a time split. But I expect it would have been a bit chaotic--so perhaps it was a good thing your eyes were closed." Mimix said, and deciding to sit down, plopped into a chair next to Jacen. But Jacen was very curious now, and it was helping him become more focused.
"Mimix, right? Back in my time, were you there? Did you help me in the hallway?" Mimix observed him closely, but then smiled.
"Yes, that was me."
"Why were you there?"
"To see if I could stop the time split. But I was oddly drawn over to you...and just in time, huh?" Mimix smiled at the pun. "I was so occupied with trying to find a certain 'spot', that I didn't realize you would be involved with all of this." Jacen sighed and leaned back in his chair.
"You know...yesterday, I felt the same way as I did when I was thrown forward in time. But not nearly as bad, just a quick wave of vertigo." He glanced over to Mimix to find her face pale, and he sat up straight. "What?"
"You felt it the day before it happened?"
"I guess so? What's wrong with that?"
"I can't believe this." Mimix stood up, and run a hand through her hair, expelling a whoosh of air. "I get it. Time can be a fickle thing, Jacen. In one time line, I was able to stop the time split a day early--the day you felt that vertigo. But in yours, I wasn't able to. Why? Because I stopped for that brief second to help you. Then when the time split happened, it...darn it."
"Woo, slow down!" Jacen said, getting to his feet and setting a hand on Mimix's shoulder. "Why is it that I felt it in the first place?"
"Because you traveled by time when the split happened. It's hard to explain...even my head is spinning." Mimix said softly, looking a bit distressed.
"Well, mine is, too." came a voice from a door opposite from the entrance, which served as an office. A man stood there, and his eyes widened in surprise. "Jacen! You're alive!"

Very interesting. Even though I'm a science freak, time confuses the heck out of me, but is still an extremely interesting subject.

( Finally, here is more! ) Chapter 2
Mr. Chestnut's Story Jacen hardly had time to blink as Mr. Chestnut strolled quickly across the room and wrapped him in a big hug. "Jacen! You're alive!" he repeated, and Jacen awkwardly patted the man's broad arm. "W-why do you say that?" Yiisa stood off to the side, silent and thoughtful.. Mr. Chestnut released Jacen and set his hands on Jacen's shoulders. "You haven't even aged...!" "Mr. Chestnut, what do you mean about me still being alive?" "Jacen, you have been missing for three years!" Yiisa clutched her hands behind her back, instantly feeling guilty. The startlement and distress in Jacen's eyes was very clear. This was all her fault...and she didn't even know how to fix it! Jacen was silent, and his gaze distant as he looked over Mr. Chestnut's shoulder. "So...everyone thinks I am dead? My family? Dave?" He didn't need an answer as he slumped down into a chair, looking at the floor. Mr. Chestnut sat beside him, heaving a gusty sigh as he looked over to Yiisa, who was turning pale. "So this whole time thing...is true?" "The proof is right in front of you," Yiisa said softly. "I need to see my family." Jacen said, looking up and over to Yiisa. Her eyes were so sad and understanding that he momentarily forgot about his own feelings. But they came back to the surface as she replied. "I'm sorry...it would not be a very good idea. Who knows what it may do to them...do you understand me?" "I agree with her, Jacen." Yiisa took a step forward to Mr. Chestnut and looked at him closely. "Mr. Chestnut, are you 'cool' with all of this? Or are you going to send us to an insane asylum?" It was a half-joke, but a serious question as well. The less people that were involved, the better. "As you said, the proof is right in front of me. I suppose that you two need a place to stay?" ( To Be Continued-- )

Yiisa was surprised at how understanding Mr. Chestnut was about all of this. Jacen had lapsed into silence as they stayed in the band room, waiting for the end of the day to come so that Mr. Chestnut could take them 'home'. The blond-haired boy was staring out on of the windows, his arms crossed and eyes glazed over in very distant thoughts. As was becoming habit, Yiisa ran a hand through her hair and sighed.
What a big mess...and how was she to start fixing it up? She paced the length of the room several times, barely hearing the teacher as he tapped away at his computer in his small office. Across the room, Jacen blinked his eyes and came back to earth, uncrossing his arms so that he could rub his eyes. This was insane, every single bit of it! He knew this wasn't a dream, but yet, the possibility of a 'time split' just wouldn't come to the terms of being part of reality.
But he was here, actually experiencing it all. His feelings were starting to simmer down and become more controllable, and he was beginning to truly think straight.
"Yiisa, how do you repair a time split?"
Yiisa stopped on her way of passing by him, and came to look out the window as well.
"I couldn't even begin to explain it, Jacen. No offense, but there is no way that your mind could even comprehend it." she said softly, and Jacen nodded. If he wouldn't be able to comprehend it, he would except that fact so that he had less to worry about.
"Are you from Earth, Yiisa?" Yiisa couldn't help but turn her head to the boy, wondering why he was asking such questions. But she decided she would tell him all she was allowed to--she owed him big time, after all.
"No, I am not."
"Do you miss your family?" Jacen asked next, crossing his arms again. He hadn't asked about the name of her planet because he guessed she wouldn't be able to tell him. Yiisa was still looking at him, curious.
"Of course I do, Jacen. Sometimes I don't see them for months at a time."
"Oh. Hmm, your world must be very advanced in order for you to time travel." Jacen quirked a brow and turned his head to Yiisa as she chuckled. "What?"
"We don't have technology at all, Jacen." Yiisa chuckled, and before Jacen could further question this Mr. Chestnut walked out of his office.
"Alright kids, let's get going!"
